Kaleb’s second surgery

Our brilliant neurosurgeon with the help of God saved our son’s life. We were told the last time they saw anything similar was about 25 years ago.

Kaleb's second surgery was on December 3rd, 2012 just 4 days after his CVR surgery. We were told it would be a miracle if he made it, and indeed we got the biggest miracle and the best gift ever. Our brilliant neurosurgeon with the help of God saved our son’s life. We were told the last time they saw anything similar was about 25 years ago. Kaleb was in the pediatric ICU, he had to be put on a ventilator and he had tubes inserted into his skull, connected to vials that drained blood from his head.

Over our 2 week stay in the hospital we had a roller coaster of a ride. Things were going great, then we would hit another bump. Kaleb was stuck so many times he came home with 37 little hole marks that were all over his body, arms and legs. Kaleb was and is such a fighter and our son never gave up on us so there was no time to fall apart on him. After all said and done Kaleb had a total of 11 transfusions, which included blood platelets and plasma. We are forever grateful for all the people who donated and for all the prayers that were sent for him.

We were told by the plastic surgeon that Kaleb was under-corrected from his first surgery and he would need to be fitted for a D.O.C. band that he needs to wear 23 hours a day. Two weeks into wearing his first helmet Kaleb had these symptoms that were only getting worse. His bowel movements had changed, he would have these screaming crying fits that would just come out of nowhere, like he was in a lot of pain. He rolled his neck back and forth a lot and developed complete insomnia. Nights were the worst for him, screaming in pain, sometimes every 10 minutes. This would go on for weeks and we were trying not to panic, ruling different things out. Bottom line, something was not right.
